“If you think you’re enlightened, spend a week with your family”
(Spiritual Teacher Ram Das)
The most intimate relationships we have in life are with our families – the one we grew up in and the one we make for ourselves through marriage and partnerships. For a young child growing up there is no greater influence than his or her family. The relationship between parents and children is fluid, dynamic and all-important.
The Hoffman process allows us to have forgiveness and compassion for our parents and family. We learn to love our parents for their essence and try to no longer react to their pain and learned patterns of negative behaviour. The importance of doing The Masterpiece and being able to do it with an open heart, allows us to embody that compassionate understanding of our parents.
However, things happen in families: our parents become ill and pass away; they become old and dependant to some degree on us; estrangement can happen within the family. How can we heal ourselves and make amends? Making peace with a parent or loved ones before they die is preferable, but it doesn’t always happen.
What feelings come up within your family? What behaviours do we still go into with them? Let us look at this honestly and explore how it affects the rest of our lives.
